The Thompson family wanted a spacious and light filled contemporary home with a grandparent apartment and garage. Understanding the balance of independent living and privacy for both parties was crucial in determining the design strategy.
The house is organised in two blocks with the main entrance atrium in between, the staggered arrangement of the blocks articulate and enclose entrance and garden spaces. Family living rooms are located on the south west garden side with the private bedrooms located on the first floor opposite. The house employs large areas of glazing and sliding doors to maximise connection with the garden and views out over Belfast and the hills beyond.
The grandparent apartment is located on the ground floor with a separate single storey side entrance and provides generous living accommodation overlooking the garden. The internal link from the apartment gives access to the shared laundry, utility and garage and leads into the entrance atrium.
The success and integrity of this house is a product of close collaborative working with the family, carefully considered design, quality materials and attention to detail.
